Date Issued April 2010
Abstract Mental illness is the third most common form of disability in the Philippines, with Southern Tagalog having the highest prevalence rate. Mental health problems not only include traditional illnesses such as schizophrenia, but also problems involving stress and depression brought about by extreme life experiences. This illnesses are more common that people think they are; people usually take medicines to deal with them. However, the problem with medicines is the side effects that they bring. This is why people have begun to look for affirmative forms of treatment. One such treatment is art therapy. Art therapy has been used by some hospitals and organizations for the benefit of their patients but the facilities that are currently being provided or not enough to maximize the healing potential of art.
Based on this idea, this research shall focus on the study of providing an alternative mental health center that shall specialize in creative arts therapies. It intends to organize a body of information that will support the development of a conceptual design for an art therapy facility, which may help in reducing mental illness in Region 4 and NCR.
