| Abstract | This thesis explores the intersection of tradition, memory and the search for familial kinship inside a Filipino-Chinese household, using the practice of burning red incense sticks as a central metaphor. It examines how limited familial gatherings evoke sentiments of longing, and how the act of lighting incense becomes an avenue for recalling, preserving, and reinterpreting shared memory. The thesis is an outdoor installation: a human-sized nest constructed from layered red incense stick. This nest signifies the narrative of rebuilding familial kinship and practiced solidarity. It serves as the primary signified object activated through a ritualistic process of ignition, aligning with Filipino-Chinese traditions of offering prayers through incense. The process of burning the Pugad Insenso, with respect to the Filipino-Chinese tradition of praying through the incense sticks itself, represents the accumulation of unsaid prayers and interpersonal aspiration of reviving the familial tradition. |
