| Abstract | Journalism in Pampanga has evolved alongside political and economic transitions, technological developments, and changing audience behaviors. Anchored in the narratives of Pampanga-based journalists, this study investigated how news was socially constructed across five historical periods: (a) Journalism Censorship and Suppression (1972-1986); (b) Democratic Press Reconstruction and Expansion (1986-1999); (c) Disaster Journalism during Mt. Pinatubo Eruption (1990-1991); (d) Digital Transition (2000-2010); and (e) Platform-based Journalism (2010-present). This study examined how Pampanga-based journalists described news construction across five historical periods and identified continuities and changes in journalistic practice. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, archival materials, and documentary analysis involving Pampanga-based journalists. Thematic analysis was employed to identify recurring patterns and transformations in journalism practices. Findings showed shifts in news production technologies, audience engagement, and reporting routines across periods, while core journalistic values remained consistent. The study concludes that journalism in Pampanga is continuously reconstructed through historical, political, economic, and technological forces while maintaining its essential role in informing and serving the public. This study contributes to Philippine journalism history by documenting the historical development of provincial journalism through the narratives of Pampanga-based journalists and highlighting the role of provincial media in adapting to social and technological change. |
