| Resource Title | sPOPtify the City: translating Original Pilipino Music (OPM) into interactive landscape design for Manila's University Belt through the lens of digital pop culture |
| Date Issued | June 2026 |
| Abstract | The University Belt (U-Belt) in Manila serves as the nation’s academic heart, where thousands of students converge daily across campuses, dormitories, and commercial corridors. Despite its cultural vitality, the district’s public spaces remain fragmented, congested, and utilitarian— failing to express the creativity and collective identity of its youthful community. This study investigates how landscape architecture can reinterpret these urban spaces by translating the cultural essence of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and the dynamics of digital pop culture into interactive and human-centered spatial experiences. Using a sound-to-space design framework, the research analyzes the rhythmic, melodic, and emotional qualities of OPM as potential drivers for spatial organization, movement patterns, and environmental atmosphere. Visual and participatory cues drawn from digital media further inform how public spaces may foster engagement, creativity, and cultural belonging. By integrating music, memory, and movement into the spatial logic of the University Belt, the study positions landscape architecture of cultural resonance- one that reconnects students to their heritage while responding to contemporary modes of digital interaction. The findings aim to demonstrate how design can bridge intangible cultural heritage and urban life, transforming the U-Belt from a transitory academic corridor into a living expression of Filipino rhythm, identity, and pride. |
