Resource Title The future of 6G in the Philippines through forecasting by analogy
Date Issued 4 July 2024
Abstract As most progressive countries move toward developing the Sixth Wireless Generation standards and advanced technologies associated with it, there is an increasing need to create new policies, develop long-term strategies, innovate products and services, and prepare for potential risks and opportunities. This paper aims to answer if the Philippines can adopt the 6G wireless network by 2030. Using Forecasting by Analogy (Martino, 1972), we systematically compare the currently implemented 5G to the initially proposed 6G requirements through different Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), dimensions, and areas. From each analysis, we found that two dimensions, particularly the Managerial and Economic dimensions, needed to catch up due to outdated policies and regulations and the need for more investment in infrastructure to provide the coverage that 6G requires. Compared to other dimensions - Technical, Societal, and Ecological - which have programs, reforms, and legislative agendas underway. Using applicable concepts and insights from a Technology Management standpoint, we propose opportunities and strategic recommendations to bridge the gap and make a promising path for a successful 6G adoption in the Philippines.
